FATHER-IN-LAW AND SON-IN-LAW

Read: EXODUS 18

Bible in a year: Matthew 18-19

As a father-in-law, Jethro showed a significant role in the life of Moses, who was his son-in-law and the leader of Israel. Their relationship, between father-in-law and son-in-law, turned out to be quite harmonious. The miraculous works of God in the journey of the Israelites eventually led Jethro to acknowledge the Lord as the God who deserves to be worshiped. And as a son-in-law, Moses continued to show respect to him.

Jethro, upon hearing all the works that the Lord had done for the Israelites, without hesitation said, "Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods." And the crucial role of Jethro in Moses' life was when he gave his advice to Moses in handling the issues of the Israelites. Jethro was a sensitive, kind-hearted father-in-law who gave important advice to Moses. God allowed Moses to meet Jethro, become his son-in-law, and stay for 40 years in Midian as a shepherd because God intended to use and shape Moses through those close to him.

It's not a secret that the relationship between father-in-law and son-in-law is often considered less harmonious. Especially if we have a father-in-law who does not know God! However, the story of Jethro and Moses teaches us that God can use those closest to us to help us. Mutual respect and willingness to listen to important advice are essential in building relationships. On the other hand, feeling more experienced and smarter will hinder, even destroy relationships.
