Usually, medals are only given to champions in competitions. However, in the sport of marathon running, every runner who crosses the finish line within the specified time will receive a medal. This medal is known as a finisher medal. This is done as a form of appreciation for their struggle to run a long distance.
Paul encouraged the Corinthian congregation to fight in faith until they reach the finish line and receive the finisher medal, namely the eternal crown. Because, in Christ, the eternal crown becomes the possession of everyone who faithfully struggles until they "reach the finish line". Paul exemplified his struggle of "running with all his might in the spiritual race" with a definite purpose. Like a boxing match, he did not hit aimlessly. Paul did not use his right as an apostle to seek profit even though it required personal discipline and willingness to live in poverty. Paul adopted the principle of the incarnation of Christ who was willing to humble himself to show empathy to those he served. Even through Paul's seemingly inconsistent behavior (cf. verses 19-22), he was actually building a bridge to introduce people to Christ without provoking hostility.
Achieving an eternal crown is certainly our desire. If so, let's fight until the finish line by applying the principles of Christ that can control oneself, be willing to humble oneself, and have empathy.
