GRATEFUL AT THE CROSSROADS

Read: 1 SAMUEL 7:2-17

Bible in a year: Hosea 8-14

Human life is like a journey. In this journey of life, we may experience success, but also failure; there are times when we feel happy, but there are also times when we are disappointed and sad. The question is, how often do we try to stop for a while and be grateful? Or do we just keep walking while looking back and regretting it? After winning the war against the Philistines in Mizpah, Samuel set up a stone at the crossroads between Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named the stone Ebenezer, an expression of acknowledgment that, 'Thus far the Lord has helped us.' Why at the crossroads? Crossroads indicate a point where people stop to see the directions of the roads to be taken next. In other words, Samuel made that crossroads as a symbol of the journey of life. Samuel hoped that the Israelites would continue to remember and see that the Lord has always guided their journey of life so far, remembering and seeing all the blessings that the Lord has given, and being grateful to Him, and continuing their journey of life according to God's guidance. Our journey of life will certainly encounter certain crossroad points. There are losses and achievements, there are successes and failures, and so on. At each crossroad point, the Lord always helps us. Therefore, let us take the time to stop for a moment and be grateful to Him by remembering and understanding that our lives are always under God's guidance. -ZDP/www.renunganharian.net
