YEAST OF THE PHARISEES

Read: MATTHEW 16:5-12

Bible in a year: Daniel 4-6

The Pharisees and the Sadducees considered their views to be the only correct ones. Everything different, especially contradicting their views, would be considered as a heretical view, as a threat to their beliefs, social status, and interests, and therefore must be rejected, silenced, eliminated. They did not hesitate to persuade, manipulate, and intimidate others to follow them in upholding what is wrong.

Indeed, among them there were also people who were open and honest. When they realized that their attitude and views were wrong, they left what was wrong, then embraced what was right. Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea, and Saul (who later became Paul) are examples of this group. However, most of them chose to maintain and uphold what is wrong, even though they had seen what is right. Annas and Caiaphas were two among the many.

We know, choosing what is right is the moral obligation of everyone at all times. From the past until now, that obligation has become the obligation of anyone, including us. However, the "yeast of the Pharisees" - that is, the tendency to choose and uphold what is wrong even though they have seen what is right - continues to dance around us and never ceases to tempt us until today.

Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. That word is a very important warning that we must heed, so that we are always careful in choosing something to believe in and follow.
