THE CONSEQUENCE OF ENVY

Read: MATTHEW 20:1-16

Bible in a year: Daniel 1-3

Sari, who has been working at a company for two years, has been happy and satisfied with her income. One day, a new employee joined and Sari found out that the new employee's income was higher than what she had been receiving. She became upset and no longer satisfied with her income.

In this parable, a landowner went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. After agreeing to pay them a denarius for the day, he sent them to work in his vineyard. At nine, twelve, three, and five o'clock he went out again and sent the unemployed to his vineyard. When evening came, the landowner instructed his foreman to call the workers and pay them their wages. The workers who started working at five o'clock came and received a denarius each. Then those who came earlier expected to receive more, but they also received a denarius each, which made them grumble against the landowner.

Often we grumble not because the blessings we receive are not enough, but because we envy the blessings of others. Do not envy the blessings and generosity received by others to the point that we are not grateful and instead become dissatisfied with the blessings we receive. A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones (Proverbs 14:30).

THE CONSEQUENCE OF ENVY, SATISFACTION AND JOY CAN TURN INTO DISSATISFACTION AND GRUMBLING
