Read: JONAH 4
Bible in a year: Ezekiel 34-36
Do we know that not everyone can become a priority customer of a bank? They must have savings of a certain amount. Being a priority customer will get various conveniences and special services. A priority customer is fully assessed by how much savings they have in the bank.
God is teaching Jonah about the value of a person in the eyes of God. Jonah hoped that all the people of Nineveh would be destroyed by the Lord because of their accumulated sins. After proclaiming the word of the Lord that led the whole city to repent, Jonah sat on a high place and awaited the punishment. However, God taught through the incident of the withered castor oil plant and the worm that gnawed it in just one day. The plant provided comfort for Jonah from the scorching sun and hot air. Jonah felt sorry for a castor oil plant that he did not plant. Moreover, God cares for all the people of Nineveh and wants them to repent. God sees them as valuable, unlike Jonah who considered them worthy of destruction. The word "cared" (verse 11) written shows not just a feeling of liking, but genuine concern and doing anything for the loved ones.
The Bible says, if one sinner repents, all of heaven rejoices (Luke 15:7). Jonah learned to understand the heart of God in looking at a person. How about us today? Do we look at others like Jonah or like Christ? Let us learn to see others like Christ, because one sinner is very valuable to God for salvation.
