Read: MATTHEW 11:25-30
Bible in a year: Ezekiel 18-20
Yoke (Greek: zugos) is a tool that is attached to an ox when the ox is used to pull a load (plow, cart, etc.). By using the yoke as a metaphor, the Lord said, 'Take My yoke upon you.' The Lord wants us to bear the 'yoke' that He has placed, which is the tasks and responsibilities that we must bear because we are followers of Christ.
Let's pay attention. The command to bear the 'yoke' is directly followed by the command 'and learn from Me.' And, the command 'learn' is translated from the Greek imperative mathete, which comes from the word mathein, which means to learn by doing and experiencing what is learned. This means that the command 'Take My yoke and learn from Me' is a command for us to learn from the Lord by carrying out and experiencing the obligations and responsibilities of being followers of Christ. What is that? Living out and manifesting love throughout our lives.
What message do we see there?
Just as we learn to ride a bike by riding a bike, learn to swim by swimming, and learn to sing by singing, we learn to do the will of God by doing the will of God, learn to care by acting caring, learn tolerance by acting tolerant, learn to love by loving, and so on.
Therefore, we are invited to learn from the Lord not by discussing about the Lord and His word, but by living out and manifesting love in our lives.
