AGREEING TO DEATH

Read: ACTS 5:1-11

Bible in a year: Jeremiah 49-50

Driven to give a sum of money from the sale of land done by Joseph, Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, also wanted to do the same. Ananias and Sapphira had agreed to sell a piece of their land and intended to give all the proceeds to the apostles. However, after the land was truly sold, the motivation began to change. Ananias held back some of the proceeds and gave the rest to the apostles. Instead of rebuking and reminding, Sapphira apparently approved her husband's intention. Not only breaking the promise, the husband and wife also agreed to speak lies before the Lord. They bore the consequences.

Wealth can indeed blind the eyes. Wealth can also tempt the heart to deviate from the truth. The initial good intention ended badly because of wealth's blinding effect. We may wonder, what if Sapphira stood firm and bravely stopped that evil intention. However, the reality was that Sapphira's heart was also carried away by the glitter of wealth. Instead of being a helper, Sapphira also perished in her husband's evil.

As in the original design of creation, God made man and woman as partners who can help, complement, and build each other in good matters. Agreements built to do the will of God will surely bring peace and blessings from the Lord. Conversely, agreements made to oppose the will of God will surely end in destruction. Therefore, the story of Ananias and Sapphira is written to remind us of how terrifying agreements made outside of God's will can be.
