Read: Matthew 1:18-25
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. (Matthew 1:19)
Bible in a year: 1 Thessalonians 4-5
Your wedding with your fiance is at hand. You both love each other and keep yourself until marriage validly established. However, all of a sudden you claim to pregnant fiance ... and not because of you. That slap Joseph experienced. Based on what he knew, he was entitled to question it until the public know about infidelity. However, he chose not to embarrass her. He took the hard road: about to divorce her quietly so that she would not bear the disgrace. That attitude also shows that he is willing to participate are considered guilty in the case.
We do not know exactly what is volatile in the heart of Joseph. We understand if his blood boil to hear her confession. However, after the anger subsided, maybe he paused, realizing that nobody is free from error. Perhaps he remembered the history of his ancestors who did not escape the embarrassing events (Matthew 1:1-17). Or, perhaps it occurred to her, words that would later say that the Son in the womb: "Whoever among you without sin, let him first cast a stone to the woman," (John 8:7).
Matthew records Joseph as a sincere person. In another translation: the murshid; righteous; the godly. He was right, precisely because it does not justify themselves and defend their rights. He was right, and therefore show no mercy. Instead of shame, he pursued the recovery. In the case of Mary, "breach" that occurred was not his fault. However, if we are faced with another person who commits an offense who among us is willing to follow in the footsteps of Joseph? - ARS
