TOWER

Baca: GENESIS 11:1-9

Bacaan tahunan: Jeremiah 35-37

After the flood in Noah's time, humans began to multiply again and the whole earth had one language and the same words. They agreed to build a city with a tower that reached to the heavens. Their goal was to "make a name" for themselves, in other words, to exalt themselves or as a sign of pride. They thought that through a building signifying power and glory, they could stay united and not be scattered over the earth. This was a rebellion against God, because from the beginning God had commanded humans to fill the earth and subdue it, surely by raising generations who obey God (Gen. 1:28, cf. Mal. 2:15).

God opposed their arrogance by confusing their language. Where they once understood each other, they became strangers to one another. The emergence of various languages became a barrier to their communication. The construction of the tower of pride came to a halt. People were scattered in different directions. Human pride turned out to only produce chaos, disputes, and destruction.

Although the situation is clearly very different, it can be said that even today, everyone is building their towers. These towers are not always in the form of buildings. They could be a variety of achievements that people seek in various fields. The question is, are all these achievements intended to be a source of self-pride? Or are they a means to show the greatness of God in all aspects of our lives? May all our aspirations, dreams, and achievements aim to glorify the name of the Lord, for He is the one who enables us to attain them.
