RELIABLE IN THE LORD

Baca: ISAIAH 36

Bacaan tahunan: Jeremiah 26-29

Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, was amazed by the attitude of the people of Jerusalem who until that day refused to surrender. Were they trying to rely on Egypt, what a futile effort! Egypt is just like a broken reed (verse 6). Or were they trying to rely on God, also a futile effort. Aren't there also gods in other lands that he had previously conquered, such as Hamath, Arpad, and Sepharvaim (verses 19-20)? He was sure that Jerusalem would not escape his hands.

Then, suddenly, 185,000 Assyrian soldiers were killed in their camp. The arrogant Sennacherib returned to his country. Not long after, he himself was killed by his own sons (see Isaiah 37:36-38). Therefore, it means that Jerusalem escaped from his hands. Sennacherib, oh Sennacherib, he did not realize that the nation he was threatening had a very mighty power. The reason is, they relied on the reliable. His name is the Lord, the God of Israel or called the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He cannot be compared to other gods because He is alive. Indeed, in Him there is the strength to defend and save.

Life in the world is full of struggles. Sometimes struggles can feel very heavy. Out there, people are oppressed, troubled, even depressed, but not us. The reason, like the people of Jerusalem, we know to rely on the reliable. We understand that we can pray for help to the Lord. He is the living God so He can act for us. In the midst of struggle, the heart remains peaceful because we believe, with the Lord, we will surely be victorious. Indeed, in Him there is an answer to whatever form of struggle we face.
