Baca: DEUTERONOMY 24:6-15
Bacaan tahunan: 2 Timothy
In the book of Deuteronomy, God commands His people to pay attention to the poor and show compassion to them. God's people are asked to empathize with them. For example, when someone hires them as daily laborers, they must pay their wages on that same day, once the work is done. Because the wages they receive might be used to meet their needs and their families' needs for that day. Failing to give the worker their due will cause suffering for them, and God affirms that it is a sin.
God desires that we fulfill what we have agreed upon with our workers (see Matt. 20:2). Employers or job providers must give their workers their due according to the agreement they have made. This includes job descriptions, payment timing, and the amount of payment. It also includes how to give it, with respect and gratitude. The way we treat our workers should reflect our behavior as God's people.
Today, workers' wages can be paid daily, weekly, monthly, or by other agreed-upon systems. Unfortunately, there are many cases where workers do not receive their rights. Payday is delayed. The salary amount is cut without explanation. Some workers are even cheated and suffer double losses. May such practices not be done by believers. Instead, we are called to pay attention to the lives of those who work for us so that they can also live prosperously.
