Go back and report to John what you hear and see ... (Matthew 11:4)
Bacaan tahunan: Acts 25-28
When work, service, and life goes well, it is easy to say that God is with us. However, what we feel when disaster suddenly came to life becomes difficult, pressured, threatened? Moreover, if we feel we must bear it all alone. What if our faith that we consider firm was suddenly shaky?
John the Baptist is the one who broke the silence after more than three centuries no prophet of God who speaks. He appeared as a powerful prophet, who dared to rebuke the sins of many people, including King Herod who was ruling that he should go to jail. It was he who introduced Jesus as the Messiah and believed he was only opening the road (compare John 1:19-37). However, when he suffered in prison, and felt compelled to bear his own, John's shaky confidence. He also sent his disciples to ask Jesus: "Are you he who is to come, or should we wait for what else?" How did Jesus react? He sent it back and tell the students what they hear and see about all the things which Jesus: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise, and the poor hear good news. Jesus wanted John to remember the prophecy of Isaiah, which is being fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus (Isaiah 29:18, 35:5-6). So, that's the truth of John's faith-affirming again.
