FINDING MEANING

Baca: 1 CORINTHIANS 13

Bacaan tahunan: Malachi

Many times the price of noble actions is suffering. Even so, many people are willing to act nobly: parents are willing to suffer for their children, medical workers dedicate their lives to Covid-19 patients, a female teacher in NTT is willing to walk through forests and rivers every day for her students. They are willing to suffer for the noble cause they are fighting for.

What makes them willing to endure suffering in such a way? "The key to enduring suffering is finding meaning in that suffering," said Friedrich Nietzsche. Do you agree?

Indeed, finding and believing in the meaning of the suffering experienced is a solid foundation for enduring suffering. However, there is an important note: Not all actions are true and good. The meaning underlying them can be wrong and evil. This means that not all meanings are adequate to be believed. Shouldn't the meaning-a solid foundation to be believed-be something true, good, moral?

The Bible says, love "bears all things" (verse 7c). Love enables people to do noble things and bear the consequences: David Livingstone is willing to face all difficulties to proclaim Christ in the interior of 19th century Africa, Dr. Sitanala is willing to risk being infected with leprosy for leprosy patients in Indonesia, Chanee Kalaweit, a Frenchman, is willing to live in the Kalimantan forest for the preservation of wildlife. And many more.

Do you see? The true meaning, which enables people to endure suffering, is love: love for God, love for fellow humans, love for fellow creations.
