CONTROLLING DESIRES

Baca: LUKE 12:13-21

Bacaan tahunan: John 1-2

Corruption is rampant. The value of seized money can make eyes widen. Some want to solve corruption cases by raising salaries. This fake solution proved to be wrong. Because corruption is also carried out by high officials who already live in abundance. The problem of corruption is a matter of the heart. There is intention from the beginning and careful planning to do and hide these inappropriate actions.

Jesus immediately showed greed as a desire that must be guarded against. This is the real source of corruption. Interestingly, Jesus separates wealth from life, stating that the two are different. Life does not come from wealth. In other words, our lives do not depend on our wealth. There are many examples. One of them, we know wealthy people suffering from terminal illnesses. No matter how much wealth a person has, their wealth cannot buy their health. Wealth also cannot buy joy, satisfaction, and freedom in life.

Corruption is a sign of how difficult it is for people to control their desires to have a lot of wealth through ways that harm many people. If influential people do it, it might be an example of behavior that is imitated, damaging the morals of many people. In addition to corruption, online gambling, addiction to shopping for luxury goods, unpaid debts, are also signs of greed. Believers must be wary of these difficult-to-control sinful desires.
